Director of Fisheries

The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) is seeking a Director of Fisheries to join a small team based in Government House in Stanley, Falkland Islands.


South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands are a UK Overseas Territory and are home to a tremendous abundance of wildlife, including penguins, seals and whales. The South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands Maritime Zone (SGSSI MZ), which includes over 1 million km2 of the Southern Ocean, is a sustainable use Marine Protected Area (MPA) and supports fisheries for Patagonian & Antarctic toothfish, mackerel icefish and Antarctic krill. The fisheries management regime is recognised as one of the best in the world, with the Patagonian toothfish fishery certified by the Marine Stewardship Council and a significant part of the Antarctic krill and mackerel icefish fisheries also certified.

Job Description

The Director of Fisheries will be legally responsible, through the Fisheries (Conservation and Management) Ordinance, for managing fisheries within the SGSSI MZ (MPA) and must ensure that fisheries are managed sustainably and to the highest international standards, whilst maximising revenue. The Director of Fisheries will also ensure that fisheries operate in accordance with CCAMLR Conservation Measures and that GSGSSI’s interests are protected at CCAMLR.
